Synopsis
After losing their mother, Alphonse and Edward Elric attempt to bring her back using the forbidden science of human alchemy. However, alchemy operates on the theory of equivalent trade, and breaking the human alchemy taboo carries a heavy price. Ed loses his leg, and Al loses his body. Ed is able to seal Al's soul inside of a huge suit of armor, at the cost of his arm. Years later, Ed (now with two mechanical limbs) and Al (still trapped in the armor) leave their childhood home, each brother concerned with the other's happiness. Ed, who has a natural talent and skill for alchemy, becomes nationally certified and is soon known everywhere as the "Fullmetal Alchemist." Their true objective is to search for any information on the fabled Philosopher's Stone, hoping it will allow them to regain their old bodies. All of their hopes rest with this mythical stone, which may not even exist at all. However, the brothers soon learn that they are not the only ones after the powerful stone.

Review
“Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost.” –The Law of Equivalent Exchange

Fullmetal Alchemist tells the story of two brothers who made a promise to right the wrongs they have made one fateful night, chasing what many have called a mad man’s dream: The Philosopher’s Stone. With it, useless material can be transmuted into gold; the Law of Equivalent Exchange, the very foundation of Alchemy, can be bypassed.

As they travel throughout their journeys, their meetings with various people makes them question about religion, war, humanity, and even their own reasons for finding the Stone. Although the anime at first has a really bright and cheery nature at its surface, there’s a dark undertone that often acts as a contrast with the cheeriness as the overall mystery begins to unfold.

This series is not to be missed to anyone who watches anime. -AoiKaze

Characters
Edward Elric

the "Fullmetal Alchemist", is the youngest State Alchemist in history and the main character of the series. He and his younger brother, Alphonse Elric, scour the world in search of the Philosopher's Stone in the hopes of restoring their bodies. In their failed attempt to revive his mother, Edward lost his right arm and left leg, having to replace them with automail limbs.
Alphonse Elric

the younger brother of Edward Elric, did not become a State Alchemist at the request of his brother. Together he and Ed scour the world in search of the Philosopher's Stone in the hopes of restoring their bodies. Unlike Edward who lost one arm and one leg in the failed attempt to revive his mother, Al lost his entire body. At the last moment, Ed sealed Al's soul in a giant armor, making him almost invulnerable.
Roy Mustang

the "Flame Alchemist", is a high-ranking member of the State Military. He has hopes of becoming the leader of Amestris, and uses his many subordinates to further him along this path.[9] Although he is loyal to the military, after the death of his best friend, Maes Hughes, he starts looking for his murderer even though he would destroy the military.
Winry Rockbell

is a childhood friend of Edward and Alphonse Elric. Winry is an automail mechanic, being the one who created the ones from Edward after he lost his right arm and his left leg while trying to revive his mother. She is very dear to both of them, and thus she is unknowingly used as a hostage by the homunculi to keep the Elrics subservient to the military.
